Object - Image

‘Object and Image’ is a collaborative research and publishing platform, building a discourse around the influence of digital and mass media on how the design discipline is known, preserved and represented in museums in the current moment. Those institutional systems tend to underline the material aspect of a design or object, instead of also analysing the digital and mass media mechanisms surrounding the creation and evaluation of them.

Through a collaborative multimedia essay on the platform’s website, we invite (established, aspiring and emerging) experts in the field of curating, design and digital culture to contribute to the research. Our proposition is to utilise fiction as a narrative form, to open up space for both criticality and experimentation. The initiating essay for our website therefore uses the year 2070 as a departure point. Contributors are invited to take on this methodology or instead utilize the initial essay as a means to think through alternative ways of addressing, analysing and displaying design objects and images.

By commissioning contributions for the platform and hosting collective conversations around the influence of digital and mass media on how the design discipline is known, preserved and represented in 21st century museums, we are creating a network of artists, designers, curators and academics to together map out the scope of the research topic and imagine alternative forms of display methods for museums.

Many thanks to Domitille Debret and Quentin Creuzet for the design and coding of the website and Michael Bojkowski for editing and continuity.
