Moisture from outside creeps into the houses and out through the hand-painted walls. In the marbling of the linen and cardboard wallpaper, the rippling edges of the water roses flow out and seem almost contrived in the already organic pattern. The water-based paints run like raindrops in the landscape paintings on the wooden panels. In the flower-covered stencil paintings spreads a new kind of flower. The water roses are beautiful and at the same time ominous, a sign of decay and ongoing climate change. https://mikaelastebystenfalk.com/I-dammens-spegling-En-resonans-av-Martorn I dammens spegling - En resonans av Martorn&nbsp; Tillfälling installation i Botaniska trädgården i Göteborg, 25 maj - 30 september 2025. Under sommaren reser sig två monumentala växter ur vattnet i Göteborgs botaniska trädgård, som påminnelser om något som är på väg att försvinna. I installationen uppmärksammar konstnärerna Mikaela Steby Stenfalk och Erik Öberg det intensiva artbevarande arbetet som sker bortom publikens blick i trädgården. Verken visualiserar den biologiska mångfaldens skörhet genom skulpturala tolkningar av Martorn och Ostronört — två rödlistade bohuslänska växter. Skulpturerna möts i Klippträdgårdens stora damm, som ett monument över dessa växter och en spegling av naturens bräcklighet i klimatförändringarnas tid. Trots att de båda växterna befinner sig i ett utsatt tillstånd visar martornen tecken på återhämtning tack vare återetableringsprojekt som inkluderar fröinsamlingar, information och skyddsbarriärer. För ostronörten ser det mörkare ut då det enbart finns runt 40 kända exemplar i Sverige. Mänsklig påverkan har drastiskt förändrat klimatet i det bohuslänska landskapet och det har skapat stora utmaningar för växtens överlevnad. Mikaela Steby Stenfalks tolkning av Martornen liknar närmast ett skelett, något som är på väg att smälta, förvrängas och försvinna, som ett kusligt eko av vår tids artutdöd. Med tiden sätter naturen sina spår och dammens vatten färgar den benvita skulpturen, en stillsam förändring som speglar växtens sårbara beroende av sin omgivning. Erik Öbergs utgångspunkt återfinns i Ostronörtens sista, extatiska blomning med blå klockor utan koppling till ett rotsystem. Växten bärs upp av en kirurgisk Ilizarov-ställning i rostfritt stål — ett brutalt och smärtsamt men också nödvändigt stöd som speglar människans dubbla roll som hot och beskyddare. Sammantaget är verken poetiska skildringar av fragilitet, skuld, hopp och vårt ansvar inför det som riskerar att gå förlorat. Sigtunastiftelsen, april–maj 2025. Skulpturen är placerad i fontänen i Sigtunastiftelsens Rosenträdgård, en symmetrisk klosterträdgård där rosor historiskt haft en central plats. Verket är inspirerat av trädgårdens tradition och människans vilja att forma naturen – att bevara, idealisera och kontrollera den. Skulpturen tar upp trädgårdens strikt ordnade former och reflekterar dess komposition genom sin spegelvända symmetri. Formen påminner om en ros men är samtidigt förändrad, uppbruten i fyra delar som ramar in fontänens vattenstrålar. I mötet med vattnet skapas en ständig rörelse, där fontänens strålar flödar genom skulpturen och förändrar dess uttryck beroende på betraktarens vinkel. Den vita, skelettliknande strukturen framstår som en kvarleva från en tid som redan börjat blekna – ett tyst vittne om en förlorad balans. Together, they tell the story of the relocation of the Abu Simbel temples in southern Egypt in the 1960s. When the Aswan High Dam was constructed, a vast area around the Nile south of the dam was submerged under the surface of the water, including many Nubian settlements and ancient monuments. Two temples gained particular attention; the temples of Ramses II and Nefetari in Abu Simbel. On behalf of UNESCO, the Swedish Vattenbyggnadsbyrån (now Sweco) headed the engineering of their relocation, with the plan to cut the temples into large pieces and move them into safety, one by one. As one of their engineers, it was my grandfather Birger Steby’s (1920-2016) position to calculate where the temples should be cut. This story has been told over and over in my family. As a child, I listened to my grandfather tell this magical fairy-tale with a candid imagination. In the project, I combine my childhood memories with my mother’s testimonies and my grandfather’s private collections of letters, images and notes, as well as Sweco’s and UNESCO’s archival documentation of the relocation. This is a memory in three generations, but it is also three generations’ perspectives, where the 1960s’ visionary view on engineering and faith in industrialisation meets contemporary questions of decolonisation, the many controverises around the construction of the dam and the forced displacement of the Nubian population.&nbsp; With the support of the Swedish Arts Grants Committee, Längmanska Kulturfonden &amp; Helge Ax:son Johnsons Stiftelse. Is it as a consolation, a process of grief, a will to honour, to spread, or to preserve that the collection grows? Thousands of meetings and fleeting moments testify to a timeline with an abrupt end. Holiday memories are mixed with rushing fires and billowing smoke. Afterwards, when parts of the cathedral remain only as pictures, what do we remember? What is preserved in our collection? The works in the exhibition are created from the 38,000 images shared on Instagram during the evening that Notre Dame was on fire, April 15, 2019. Through photogrammetry, the images have been brought together into three-dimensional fragments. The physical shapes become snapshots of an otherwise constantly flowing medium and its frozen state gives us time for reflection. The sculptures question hierarchies where traditional (often professional) perceptions of what is considered important and historically interesting can be challenged by a joint action of collecting. Curator: Vilma&nbsp;Luostarinen. Att göra ett utsnitt innebär att samtidigt inkludera och exkludera. När vi tar ett fotografi riktar vi blicken, fångar och delar ett utsnitt ur verkligheten. På ett liknande sätt kan arkitekten placera ett fönster så att det ramar in en särskild vy, eller ett arkiv berätta utvalda delar av historien. Som människor väljer vi ut, sållar och fokuserar, medan periferin suddas ut, förvrängs och försvinner bort. Med inspiration från de utsnitt som återfinns i Sigtunastiftelsens miljöer visar Mikaela Steby Stenfalk ett urval av tidigare och nya arbeten. Hennes bakgrund inom arkitektur, visuell kommunikation och kuratering har satt tydliga spår i hennes bildkonstnärliga praktik, där den mänskliga blicken är central. Genom att kombinera traditionella och digitala verktyg får hon syn på tidigare svåråtkomliga berättelser och belyser dem med sina verk. Teknologin blir här ett konstnärligt verktyg, snarare än något som riskerar att ersätta människans unika skaparförmåga. Mikaela Steby Stenfalks skulpturala verk uttrycker både det personliga och det kollektiva, ofta i ett skede av förlust eller förändring. Som till exempel i ett pågående projekt för Göteborgs Botaniska trädgård där konstnären skapar en tio gånger större avbildning av den rödlistade ”Martornen”. Den kraftigt uppförstorade växten liknar närmast ett skelett, något som är på väg att smälta, förvrängas och försvinna, som ett kusligt eko av vårt tids artutdöd och miljöförstörelse. Upplevelsen av tillhörighet till platser är också återkommande, som i Flyktiga fragment av Notre Dame, en serie fragmenterade skulpturer som utgår från de tusentals bilder som delades på Instagram medan Notre Dame i Paris stod i brand den 15 april 2019. Verken visar inte bara var vi väljer att fokusera blicken, vilka utsnitt av verkligheten vi skapar och delar med varandra, utan synliggör framför allt vad vi inte ser och som därmed riskerar att falla at ArkDes — Swedish National Centre for Architecture and Design to initiate the museum’s new exhibition space. Together with Director Kieran Long, I researched and developed the concept and realisation of Boxen, which opened on June 20th 2018. The gallery is designed by Dehlin Brattgård Arkitekter and has a bold graphic identity designed by Studio Reko, both chosen after invited competitions between emerging architecture and graphic design studios in Sweden. The film, as well as the book The Model Archive - A Witness to the City&nbsp;(A+O Publishing, 2023), uses the archive as a lens through which they reflect on the current urban planning of Stockholm from an artistic as well as an architectural point of view. As Hito Steyerl stated in Politics of Post-representation (2014): “Social media makes the shift from representation to participation very clear: people participate in the launch and life span of images, and indeed their life span, spread and potential is defined by participation.” Within this condition the ‘crowd’ determines the force of the image, not the professional. Social media platforms such as Instagram can now be seen an open-source, digital archive of public space; collectively gathered, shared and remembered by the public itself. The visitors have transformed from passive spectators to virtual storytellers, as they upload the narratives of their experiences onto social media. The Sistine Chapel is part of the Apostolic Palace, the official residence of the pope, in Vatican City. The chapel is home to many pieces of art including statues, tapestries, and paintings by Michelangelo Buonarroti. One of the most famous attractions is Michelangelo’s ceiling paintings including the Creation of Adam, as well as The Last Judgment&nbsp;behind the altar. Despite the strict prohibition of photography inside the Sistine Chapel, the number of images on Instagram are increasing rapidly. Digital categorising systems such as hashtags—a word or phrase used on social media to identify images on a specific topic—these images can easily be gathered. At the time of the production of Collective Collection: Sistine Chapel, the hashtag #sistinechapel had accumulated 118.615 images. Each day, approximately 30 new images are added to the hashtag. What is the collective memory of the Sistine Chapel? Collective Collection crowd-sources one day worth of images (i.e. 30 images) from Instagram and re-constructs the chapel through photogrammetry. Mimicking a three-dimensional scanner, the public collectively present a fragmented, digital paraphrase of the original space. Simply explained, photogrammetry works better the more images are available: Areas of the chapel which were photographed frequently become clear and detailed, meanwhile areas such as the floor is completely missing. The method works in a forensic way, which allows us to trace back a moment in time and space, through the lens of social media.
